The Committee on Regional Development (REGI) oversees the development of the European Union regions in accordance with the cohesion policy set in the EU treaties.
It consists of 84 members and deputies. The function of the Committee’s chair is performed by Iskra Mihaylova, the Bulgarian MEP, representing the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).
The Committee has such tools at its disposal as the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund and the European Social Fund, which are in the same time the instruments coordinated by the Commission. The Committee evaluates the impact that the policy implemented has on the economic and social cohesion in regions, it is responsible for regional and cross-border cooperation, as well as for the urban dimension of the cohesion policy. The Committee on Regional Development ensures also the cohesion in peripheral regions and isles of the EU.
In the new term of office our Committee will implement its assumptions concerning cohesion in regions by achieving objectives connected with following priorities:
- research and development
- information and communication technology
- enhancing competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises
- low-carbon economy
- employment and free movement of labour
- better education
- social inclusion
- improvement of public administration
